Working with Driftwood.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I have been having great fun working with pieces of driftwood that I find on my daily walks on the beach.

Each time I find a piece I can usually visualise what I am going to do with that little piece of nature – however sometimes it takes a little longer to get the feel of the piece. Every piece of work is unique and there can never be another piece like it, as no two pieces of driftwood wood are ever the same.

First I take the necessary cleaning and pest control procedures to ensure the wood free and clean of any unwanted pests.  Then comes the shaping and preparation.  I find it very enjoyable whittling and shaping the wood into the shape that I can ‘see’ within the wood. Next the sanding and preparation of the surface to ensure the paint will adhere.

Once painted and finished each piece is completely sealed with a clear heavy duty sealer.

I often paint Australian fauna to raise their awareness as many species are declining and this is a disturbing trend.

Hope you like my latest little creatures.

24 ways to Create Art No 19 and No 20

sculptureSculpture:  the art of giving shape in volumes.

Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. It is one of the plastic arts. Durable sculptural processes originally used carving (the removal of material) and modelling (the addition of material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials but, since modernism, shifts in sculptural process led to an almost complete freedom of materials and process. A wide variety of materials may be worked by removal such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling, or moulded, or cast.

Sculpture in stone survives far better than works of art in perishable materials, and often represents the majority of the surviving works (other than pottery) from ancient cultures, though conversely traditions of sculpture in wood may have vanished almost entirely. However, most ancient sculpture was brightly painted, and this has been lost.

Sculpture has been central in religious devotion in many cultures, and until recent centuries large sculptures, too expensive for private individuals to create, were usually an expression of religion or politics. Those cultures whose sculptures have survived in quantities include the cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean, India and China, as well as many in South America and Africa.

The Western tradition of sculpture began in Ancient Greece, and Greece is widely seen as producing great masterpieces in the classical period. During the Middle Ages, Gothic sculpture represented the agonies and passions of the Christian faith. The revival of classical models in the Renaissance produced famous sculptures such as Michelangelo’s David. Modernist sculpture moved away from traditional processes and the emphasis on the depiction of the human body, with the making of constructed sculpture, and the presentation of found objects as finished art works.

singingSinging: the art of human voice, solo or combined.

Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm. One who sings is called a singer or vocalist. Singers perform music (arias, recitatives, songs, etc.) that can be sung either with or without accompaniment by musical instruments. Singing is often done in a group of other musicians, such as in a choir of singers with different voice ranges, or in an ensemble with instrumentalists, such as a rock group or baroque ensemble or as a soloist

In many respects human song is a form of sustained speech. Singing can be formal or informal, arranged or improvised. It may be done for pleasure, comfort, ritual, education, or profit. Excellence in singing may require time, dedication, instruction, and regular practice. If practice is done on a regular basis then the sounds are said to be more clear and strong. Professional singers usually build their careers around one specific musical genre, such as classical or rock. They typically take voice training provided by voice teachers or vocal coaches throughout their careers.

24 ways to create Art – Method Three and Four

sydney opera house Architecture, the art of projecting and designing buildings, and managing space
Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements. Architecture has to do with planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience to reflect functional, technical, social, environmental and aesthetic considerations. It requires the creative manipulation and coordination of materials and technology, and of light and shadow. Often, conflicting requirements must be resolved. The practise of Architecture also encompasses the pragmatic aspects of realizing buildings and structures, including scheduling, cost estimation and construction administration. Documentation produced by architects, typically drawings, plans and technical specifications, defines the structure and/or behavior of a building or other kind of system that is to be or has been constructed.  For example the Sydney Opera House, a superb piece of architecture and it is instantly recognised world wide

Graffiti is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface, often in a public place.] Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and it has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire.graffiti-art3

In modern times, paint (particularly spray paint) and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In mostcountries, marking or painting property without the property owner’s consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime.

Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Within hip hop culture, graffiti has evolved alongside hip hop musicb-boying, and other elements.[3] Unrelated to hip-hop graffiti,[citation needed] gangs use their own form of graffiti to mark territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities.

Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials, law enforcement, and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested and reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.

24 ways to create art – Method One and Two

An artwork is a representation of personal expression created with a variety of materials and techniques including but not limited to: drawing, painting, photography, digital art, sculpture, mixed media, installation, performance, and mixed media.  Through this physical creation we reveal our interpretation of learned topics combined with experiences and memories.  An artwork is a product of our imagination.

Creating a piece of artwork means constructing a visual image, whether it is three-dimensional or two-dimensional, to reflect your understanding of the assignment.  An artwork can be created in many different ways.  As long as it possesses your personal touch and demonstrates your thought process and message, it may be considered a work of art.

We have identified 24 different ways you can create art and we will cover each of these over the next month.

Method No One:

Drawing, the art of creating meaningful shapes from nothing, generally on paper

easel 4

Drawing is a form of visual art that makes use of any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Instruments used include graphite pencilspen and inkinked brushes, wax colour pencilscrayonscharcoalchalkpastels, various kinds of erasers, markersstyluses, various metals (such as silverpoint) and electronic drawing. An artist who practices or works in technical drawing may be called a drafter or draftsman or draughtsman.

A small amount of material is released onto a surface, leaving a visible mark. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials, such as cardboard, plastic, leathercanvas, and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboardor whiteboard or indeed almost anything. The medium has been a popular and fundamental means of public expression throughout human history. It is one of the simplest and most efficient means of communicating visual ideas. The wide availability of drawing instruments makes drawing one of the most common artistic activities

From the very beginning man has made marks to record their lives.   Firstly there were Cave paintings found on cave walls and ceilings,  those of prehistoric origin,  date back to some 40,000 years ago.

All civilisations – Chinese, Middle eastern,  Egyptian, Roman and Greek – all had their own methods and ways of placing their marks or drawings to record their journey.

This mark making continues right up  to modern times.

An Artist draws because they feel the need to make their mark.

Method No Two:

Engraving, a variant of sculpture, generally made in smaller items

engraving4Engraving has a history dating back over 1500 years and is the method used for incising or marking a design or text on to a hard surface by cutting grooves into the substrate.  The result may be very intricate, decorative or a simple statement.  The industrial revolution changed the methods employed as machines did much of the work previously done by hand. The advent of the computer has more recently revolutionised the engraving industry.   Many different types of machines have been introduced that can do the work faster and more precisely, improving turnaround and cost effectiveness.
