I have had a client asking for a large black and white geometrical piece for their front hallway, to match their front floor mat! What I have always called this type of art is ‘Interior Decor’ art and I haven’t been a fan of this type of work but it seems growing in popularity.
I must also admit that I don’t usually do geometrical as my art is more organic and flowing but I chose to rise to the occasion and accept the challenge.
The customer wanted a very simple pattern so initially I was not able to include any embellishments. Being large and all the straight lines and corners, it took ages! However I found it a lesson in concentration and precision and great practice in painting straight lines. The repetition I found to be mind relaxing as I was simply following the pattern and filling in the spaces.
I was however able to convince the client to allow me to include a quirky addition to the painting to give it some soul – a climbing man.
The reason I haven’t done geometric in the past is that I have always thought that it wasn’t artistically exciting enough. However I was slightly surprised hat after finishing the piece that I am now incentivised to try to experiment with some geometric patterns in my work. It will be interesting to so where it eventuates over time.
One of my favorite pastimes is reading. When I was younger my Mother used to call me a Book Owl because I would rather sit and read a book than do my chores. I therefore thought I would paint a few images that I could use for bookmarks as I love to slip a bookmark into all the Birthday Cards that I send to family and friends. I chose the theme for these bookmarks of Australian animals enjoying the pleasure of reading.

Pete the Pelican: I love watching these fellows. They always look so intelligent and I’m sure they would enjoy a good read as much as I do!
Ollie the Owl: with his thick reading glasses and intense gaze, he definitely looks like a ’Book Owl’.
Jackie, the kookaburra: I love listening to their laugh. They always look so cheeky and I’m sure they would enjoy a good laugh when reading a Joke Book.
Joey the Kangaroo: Joey certainly loves his Mother reading him a bedtime story.
Kenny the Koala: He certainly looks like he is enjoying his favorite story in the branches of a shady gum tree.
Blackie: My magnificent Black Cockatoo is enjoying reading a good yarn.
Eccy the Echidna: Such a prickly little fellow but this means he is left in peace when he reads with no one bothering him.
I hope you like them.
