NEW DRESS

Oil, wax medium, paper dress pattern on canvas

I was cleaning out my sewing cabinet and found all my old paper dress patterns.  I thought I might try and include some of the lovely paper patterns in a piece of art.

A very large abstract painting painted in many layers to create texture and depth. All the colours from the under layers show through to provide interesting character.

I have sewn many dresses over the years and it is always exciting to make a new dress. This piece shows the wearer showing off her new evening dress. I have used the paper pattern to create the dress, it has many folds and crevices – lots of texture and the end result looks like a gorgeous green taffeta. 

I never want my pieces to simply be interior décor art but something individual and full of interest.

Homage to Picasso

Homage to Picasso

Painted on Driftwood

This piece in painted on driftwood found on my local beach. It is in homage to Picasso who is one of my inspirations.   

She is in the style of Picasso’s Dora Maar paintings. By some accounts, Dora Maar’s relationship with Pablo Picasso marked the end of her artistic career. When the young photographer took up with the older, celebrated artist in 1936, she was a rising star in Surrealist circles.

She is painted in acrylic paint and has a hook on the back to mount on the wall.

She is full of color and life.

BOTANICA

Large pastel coloured abstract painted in acrylic on canvas. This painting was painted in many layers to create texture and depth.  All the colours from the under layers show through to provide interesting character. Your imagination can interpret the various shapes and contours into flowers, leaves, butterflies, mushrooms, water ponds.

Each individual will see something different in this painting which was my intention, I like to make the viewer work to enjoy the painting.  I don’t want my pieces to simply be interior décor art but something individual and full of interest.

Painted for spring.  Flowers make you happy and their beauty always demands your attention. I painted this vase of colorful flowers to brighten up the home.

Painted in the impressionist style, the quick thick paint strokes give a liveness to the painting. I used tones of blue, turquoise, white and green.

Ghost Gums

Eucalyptus are a passion of mine. We lived next to bushland and spent hours playing among gum trees as a child and the smell of eucalyptus transports me back to those carefree times. 

Therefore, it goes to say that Gum Trees are a bit of a passion of mine. I have painted many gum trees over the years and currently I’m working on a new series of paintings of my beloved Gums. 

Ghost Gums is one of this series. For residents and travellers of Australia’s arid heartlands, it is the Ghost Gum, ranging prominently across rocky slopes, red sand plains and arid creek flats that typifies the outback.

Myriad scratched and gouged layers of blues, greys, pinks and whites are utilised to portray the physical and historic attributes of the Ghost Gum.

Sittting under a Coolabah – Shades of Banjo Pattterson

Eucalyptus are a passion of mine. We lived next to bushland and spent hours playing among gum trees as a child and the smell of eucalyptus transports me back to those carefree times.  

An iconic symbol that infuses Australians with a sense of place, is the Coolabah Tree.  Waltzing Matilda’s words ‘under the shade of a Coolabah tree’ raises goose bumps and confirms I belong – I am Australian.

When I paint, I usually include the human form and often a sense of what it is to be Australian.

This piece features the Coolabah tree; sitting underneath is a female figure, what is she doing there? 

In my practice my preferred medium is oil and cold wax, this enables me to utilise many layers of paint to create interest and depth. Myriad scratched and gouged layers of blues, greys, pinks plus whites are utilised to portray the Coolabah tree and female figure.   

 

Bitumen

When we visited Tasmania, I immediately hit the bitumen.  Like a modern-day explorer, I use bitumen roads and highways to seek the natural beauty of Tasmania.  However, whilst these highways traverse and float over the land acting like a magic carpet to take me wherever I wish, combined with today’s ever-growing civilisation, they tend to mask the real Tasmania.

Method:

This piece is initially painted in many layers of blues greens oranges and purple to represent the colours of natural Tasmania – it’s beautiful trees, mountains, lakes, rivers and sky. 

This montage of colour is then covered in grey and white to represent today’s continual encroachment of buildings and development on the landscape.  Grey and white signifies tin, concrete and steel, all dull uninspiring colours.  Then over that, is painted harsh black to represent the bitumen. 

Tasmania’s natural beauty is hidden beneath civilisation. As we traverse the bitumen to get where we want to go, we must delve deep to see the natural Tasmania.  Look through the black, grey and white, it is there underneath, waiting to be discovered.
